Kilimanjaro starts before you reach the trail.
This guide provides general travel preparation information and does not replace medical advice or your final climb briefing.
FITNESS
Train for repeated trekking days rather than one short burst of effort. Walking, hiking, stairs, aerobic conditioning and leg endurance can all support preparation.
ALTITUDE
Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain. Fitness alone does not prevent altitude problems, so acclimatization, pacing and communication with your guide matter.
GEAR
Layering is essential. Conditions can move from warm lower slopes to freezing summit temperatures. Use an appropriate packing list and test important gear before travel.
FOOTWEAR
Use well-fitted trekking boots that have already been broken in. Pack suitable socks and protect your feet throughout training and the climb.
HYDRATION & FOOD
Drink regularly, eat consistently and tell your guide if nausea or altitude symptoms make this difficult.
HEALTH
Discuss high-altitude travel with a qualified healthcare professional, especially if you have medical concerns or take regular medication.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Choose coverage appropriate for high-altitude trekking and confirm the altitude limit and emergency/rescue terms in the policy.
MINDSET
Kilimanjaro rewards patience. A steady pace, rest, communication and willingness to make safe decisions are more important than rushing.
The summit is the goal. A safe and well-supported mountain journey is the priority. Never hide symptoms from your guide because you are worried about turning around.
