WHY THIS ROUTE?

Mount Kilimanjaro — The Scenic Route

Machame is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic routes, moving through rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and the high-altitude summit zone. The seven-day format provides a more gradual acclimatization profile than shorter versions of the route.

DAY BY DAY

Your Kilimanjaro climb.

Pacing, acclimatization and mountain conditions remain central throughout the route.

01
DAY 1

Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Meet the mountain team, complete park formalities and begin through the lower rainforest zone toward Machame Camp.

OVERNIGHT: Machame Camp
02
DAY 2

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Climb out of the forest into heath and moorland, with changing views across the Shira Plateau.

OVERNIGHT: Shira Camp
03
DAY 3

Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco

Gain altitude toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco. This climb-high, sleep-lower pattern supports acclimatization.

OVERNIGHT: Barranco Camp
04
DAY 4

Barranco → Karanga

Continue through the Barranco section and traverse toward Karanga, keeping the day measured to support recovery and acclimatization.

OVERNIGHT: Karanga Camp
05
DAY 5

Karanga → Barafu

Move into the alpine zone and reach Barafu, the high camp used to prepare for the overnight summit attempt.

OVERNIGHT: Barafu Camp
06
DAY 6

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka

Begin the summit attempt during the night, aiming for Uhuru Peak before descending carefully to the Mweka area.

Reaching the summit depends on weather, altitude response, health, pace and mountain conditions. Summit success cannot be guaranteed.

OVERNIGHT: Mweka Camp
07
DAY 7

Mweka → Mweka Gate → Arusha / Moshi

Complete the final descent through the forest, exit the park and transfer onward to Arusha or Moshi.

OVERNIGHT: Departure / Arusha / Moshi

FAQ

Questions before you climb.

It can be suitable for fit and well-prepared first-time climbers. The seven-day version gives useful acclimatization time, but Kilimanjaro remains a demanding high-altitude trek.
