Respect the altitude. Prepare for the journey.
Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek on standard routes, but altitude, cold, long trekking days and summit night make it physically and mentally demanding.
Choosing a Route
Clarity Tours currently presents Machame 7 days and Marangu 6 days. Machame is tent-based and scenic; Marangu uses mountain huts.
Altitude
Altitude affects people differently and fitness does not guarantee protection from altitude illness. Slow pacing, acclimatization and honest communication with your guide matter.
Training
Prepare for repeated trekking days with walking, hiking, aerobic conditioning, stairs and leg endurance. Training should begin well before travel.
Mountain Accommodation
Machame uses camping tents. Marangu uses designated mountain huts. These accommodation styles should not be confused in trip descriptions.
Clothing & Gear
Use a layering system suitable for warm lower slopes, rain, wind and freezing summit conditions. Boots should be well fitted and broken in before the climb.
Mountain Team
Guides, assistant guides where required, porters and cooks support the expedition. Treat the mountain team with respect and follow guide instructions.
Summit Night
Summit attempts commonly begin overnight. Cold, darkness, altitude and fatigue make this the most demanding part of the climb.
After the Climb
Build recovery time into your itinerary. Safari or Zanzibar can follow the mountain, but the transition should respect your energy and travel schedule.
No responsible operator can guarantee a summit. The summit is the goal; a safe and well-supported mountain journey is the priority.
